Darkness At The Zoo

Ani and I went to the zoo today. It was very dark and we got there some time after 10am. WE were smart enough to bring an umbrella. After going to the bathroom, we were going to go on the outside trail before the rain came. Well, when we got out, it was already raining and we decided to go see the aardvarks then come back. The zoo had gotten another aardvark since the last time we were there. They have 2 now and we wanted to see the new addition. after the aardvark visit we made our way back inside to find staff manning every door.

We had no idea what was going on and decided to go on the tropics trail. The hallway to the trail was so dark it looked like the zoo must have been closed. The hall is lit by sky light. When we got to the trail, all of the people were being ushured into the next room. They told us that no one was to be under the sky lights and we also found out there had been an outdoor evacuation until the storm cleared. So, for about 15 minutes, we couldn't go outside or on any of the trails.

It wasn't too bad and we finally got to see the animals. The zoo had recently gotten a new exhibit, Hot Spots of South America, and I was more excited about seeing that than the tapirs (my favorite animal). When we got to the new exhibit all of the animals were MIA axcept for the agouti, a very large rat. It was a little disappointing but the day had been so much fun so far that I just let it go.

When we were done with the inside trails the rain had stopped. So, we went out and did the entire outside trail. It was a lot of fun. The camels had been taken out so they could create a savanah exhibit which is coming next summer. The tigers, wolves, and takins were right in front of us and all of the animals were up and about after the rain.

I love it when interesting things happen at the zoo. Most of the people saw the rain as an annoyance but I had a blast. Today was right up there with seeing the tapirs mate on our anniversary a couple of years ago. I can't wait to go back again.

I just wanted to note that these animal sketches are really great. You instinctively have a great idea for shape. The taper drawing is my favorite. Keep up the great work and draw, draw, draw!
